Online schooling is in its early days. Many people are wondering whether it will be better or worse than traditional schooling. As more and more people are trying it, more come to realise just what good it can do. After running a survey on the topic of Online Education, we have come to the conclusion that online schooling is on the rise. As people are discovering it, they become convinced that this is definitely the education of the future.

In our survey, we asked many people what they thought. 65% said that online education was definitely better than traditional education. 35% preferred traditional education.

Of the 65% we received the following comments:

A single mother of four kids wrote: “Online Education is definitely very helpful for single parents who are working. If I wasn’t able to take my classes online I would not be able to study and get my diploma. Taking care of my family and working full time leaves no time to sit in a class and be taught. Online education enabled me to work my studies around my busy schedule. This means I can upgrade my skills so that I will be able to get a higher paying job so that I can take better care of my family.”

Paul, the principal of a high school wrote: “Online Education is definitely the way education will be conducted in future, as it will help more students be able to pass. We started an online branch of our school and students who failed or were at risk were encouraged to complete their studies online. Most of these students were able to pass their courses because it enabled them to learn at their own pace, and the distractions, or the ability to distract others was taken away.”

Casey also wrote along this line and said: “So much time is taken up settling a class and dealing with others that have behaviour problems. Online education eliminates this and you can just get on with studying.”

Brendon says that “Online Education is the same as Traditional Education as it is really still teaching but just done in another way.”

Susan says: “Teaching is really standardised online and the same material can be taught to everyone. What makes it so good is that each person can then take this material and do it in his or her own time. Some take faster and some are slower learners. This means each person can learn at his or her own pace.”

Other opinions from parents were that there are better opportunities as there are greater choices of subjects as at a traditional school. That online education teaches self-discipline, whereas in school you have discipline.

Amongst the opinions that online education is not better than traditional education; some people thought that it was just for adults and that you need to be self-disciplined and very motivated to be able to do your education online. The main complaint was that it offers more distraction for children if they are not supervised.

More and more people choose to study online rather than at a traditional school. Let’s look at the top reasons for choosing an Online School over a traditional one:

    • No commuting necessary. You don’t need to get up earlier but can get up just before your online class.
    • Students can study at their own pace and get ahead or catch up if they are behind.
    • You can graduate earlier – or later
    • If you have a job or other commitments, online schooling allows you to work around that, giving you the flexibility to fit study in around your schedule
    • You don’t need to hang around negative people and can make friends only with like-minded people.
    • You can avoid distractions caused by classmates that aren’t serious about their studies and cause distraction by their behaviour
    • If you’re gifted you can get ahead quicker.
    • If you’re struggling in some area you can first work on the areas you’re struggling in before you move on. In a classroom situation you have to move on whether you are ready or not
    • There is a greater variety of subjects to choose from, and you can choose any combination, thereby not having to choose only what the school can offer.
    • You have the freedom to dress as you want, take breaks when you want, have outside hobbies or sport and work your study around your schedule.
    • You save money, because online schools don’t have the costs that a traditional school has.
    • You save time – in a traditional school, students need to go from one class to another. It saves the time it takes to settle a class, and the time it takes to settle students with behaviour problems.

Many people online cite as disadvantages:

Social interaction with classmates

It has been proven through studies done by university students that homeschooled children are better adjusted socially than children who go to a traditional school. If you are worried about the lack of social interaction, join a hobby club and a sports club where you can interact with others. It is healthy to have outside interests anyway.

Interaction with your teacher

People who are against online learning say that you need a good relationship with your teacher. This is why we recommend an online school where you have live interactive online learning. This way, you get the best of both worlds. You can get the all the benefits online learning has to offer, without the usual disadvantages.

There has been much debate over online education and whether it will ever replace mainstream education. Let’s look at seven reasons online learning is the preferred choice for many students:
1. Computers are students’ natural way of life
Most of today’s students have grown up around computers and find it the most natural way to learn and interact. They use computers for everything: from social interaction (read Facebook) to finding out things. My son who has just completed his degree, Googles everything he wants to know.  If you ask a question to no-one in particular or you’re wondering aloud about something, he has the answer in around a minute.
With this attitude to learning the next logical step will be online education.
2. A student can work as fast or as slow as they want
Students prefer working at their own pace. In a classroom situation students often get very bored as teachers need to go at the pace of the slowest student. If the student learns on his own online, he or she will take their natural pace of learning, which is right for them.
3. It empowers the student to interact
Students who would normally be quiet and shy in class have the confidence to interact on a digital platform where they don’t feel as exposed as in a classroom situation where others could intimidate them. If the online school offers live, interactive classes, the result is a winner.
4. There is always space for more students
One of the problems schools face are the numbers of students dropping out of class. As students who are enrolled online can work at their own pace, they have time to finish their assignments.
5. It is less expensive
Going to a regular school, students often pay between $3,000 and $5,000 for a years’ worth of education. Online education doesn’t have the expenses a normal school has and can often take a larger number of students per teacher, which makes it more cost effective.
6. The student learns better as there are fewer distractions
One would think that students would be distracted by computer games when learning online. However, the truth is that because students are so familiar with the online environment, they actually learn better online with fewer distractions as there are no classmates. They can also focus better, and learn quicker, which leaves ample time for games.
7. A bigger choice of subjects
Often students find that they have a limited choice of subjects because of student numbers being too low to warrant paying a teacher. This does not exist online. In learning online the student has an unlimited amount of subjects to choose from.
It is time to face facts: Online learning is an area that will grow and overtake mainstream education. It is here to stay.
